Winter is here. The days are shorter, the nights are longer, and there is darkness all around. Adults and schoolchildren therefore have to get up in the morning to go to work, often during hours when it is still dark outside. To top it off, the Irish winter sets in and sweeps away the last golden leaves of autumn with torrential downpours that last all week.
So really, how are you supposed to ride out the winter blues and stay positive when it's dark and wet wherever you go? Below you will find some tips and tricks to help you get through the harsh winter months ahead.
Get up and running !
Yes, working out isn't everyone's favorite activity, but even 20 minutes of vigorous activity can do the trick, and a gym will keep you snug while you battle your seasonal setback.
Stick to a sleep routine
It can be too tempting to sleep and stay in your cozy cocoon of blankets and pillows; but it will tire you even more. Instead, it is advisable to go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time as well, including on weekends. This way your internal clock starts ticking at a steady pace.
Get that hot chocolate you've been craving!
Relax with a steaming cup of cocoa in your hand, curled up in your favorite duvet, it's not only a soothing ritual to look forward to, but also a great way to help you fall asleep, so it's best to drink it in the evening.
Find your friends!
Especially in Winter, when even Ireland's emerald landscapes seem to pale, it's easy to give in to laziness and comfort and before you know it you haven't called your friends in weeks. Being in good company eases the winter blues, especially because you'll find that you're not the only one having trouble getting up in the morning.
Take vitamins D!
Vitamin D can be hard to get in Winter due to the lack of sunshine. There are also other options such as light therapy, so don't hesitate to call your healthcare professional if the Winter blues are getting you down.
Stay warm !
