Language Stay in Dublin, Ireland

Hi, my name is Laura. I`m from a small village in Switzerland. I work in a little stationery shop in Lucerne. I was in Ireland for three weeks because of a language stay. In my first week I had school in North Dublin. I learned a lot about using English in the daily routines but also a great deal of new grammar. I recognised that the school in Ireland is way more relaxed than the one I go to in Switzerland. I really liked the vibe at the school because everyone who was there wanted to learn something! The school which I’m going to in my country was the one who asked me to consider doing a language stay. They sent an email to all the students in my school offering a language stay. I read the email but didn`t consider doing it at first. Well, a day before the deadline I wrote my application in English and applied for the three-week language stay in Dublin, Ireland. And I’m glad I did it!

In my second and third week I got to work at Office Supplies Ireland (OSI) in Deansgrange. The team there were lovely from day one. They showed me all the different tasks they’re doing at Office Supplies Ireland, and I helped them each day. Some of my tasks where unpacking orders, stocking orders, putting the orders into the van for delivery, reorganizing the shelves and doing social media posts. There is a large variety of tasks in the store. I realised that a lot of the products they have in the store, we sell as well in the stationery shop in Switzerland where I work. Sometimes it’s even the same brand. In the shop where I work in Switzerland, we have way more decoration items and more child friendly things like colouring books. Furthermore, OSI is selling more stuff online compared to our shop in Switzerland because they have an organized online shop.

Time flies! I realised that especially in those three weeks because as soon as I arrived in Ireland, there were so many new things to see and I settled in very quickly. We went on daytrips and used every free minute to explore something new. We visited Galway, the cliff walks at Howth, some different sightseeing like Temple Bar, the Half Penny Bridge, the Spire, the General Post Office, St. Stephens Green Park, Trinity College, the Botanical Garden, Croke Park (we did the skyline tour there) and lastly we visited Phoenix Park with the beautiful deer. The Cliffs of Moher was my personal highlight!

In those three weeks I learned a lot about the language, the people, the culture, the food and how they work but also about myself! It has been a great experience!
