Gaelic Games in Ireland

The two main games in Gaelic Games are Gaelic Football and Hurling. They have some key similarities: they are both played by 15-player teams in the same structure, and they have the same scoring system. The biggest competitions are the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. They were both founded in 1887 and the Championship has been played on a straight knockout basis whereby once a team loses, they are eliminated from the championship. The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final was listed in second place in the “10 sporting events you have to see live”, after the Olympic Games.

Hurling and Football

This Sunday, 17th of July is the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final between Kilkenny and Limerick in Croke Park, Dublin. Kilkenny won the Semi-Final 2-26 (32) – 0-20 (20) against Clare and Limerick beat Galway 0-27 (27) – 1-21 (24). This is the first meeting of Kilkenny and Limerick in the final since 2007.  Kilkenny haven’t won an All-Ireland Championship since 2015. So, if they lose this final, it will be their seventh season in a row without a title. Limerick are aiming to complete a three-in-a-row for the first time.

Next Sunday, 24th of July is the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship between Galway and Kerry in Croke Park. Galway won the Semi-Final against Derry 2-08 (14) – 1-06 (9) and it is now in the first All-Ireland Final since winning it in 2001. They are also aiming to win their tenth All-Ireland final. This would make them the third county to reach double figures in the all-time rankings. Kerry won the Semi-Final against Dublin in a very close match 1-13 (16) – 1-14 (17). They are aiming to win their first All-Ireland final since 2014.
