Clock Time Change

On Sunday October 30th was the big time change in Ireland. We hope that you all turned your clocks back for one hour. We are now officially in the Wintertime.  Now you also have to be more careful in the evening because it gets darker at around 5 pm. This also means the days are getting shorter. This would be the perfect time to get yourself a High Visibility Vest and a torch so people can see you much easier, if you are out walking or cycling in the evening.

Why does time change exist?

Back in 1895, a New Zealander named George Hudson supposedly came up with the basis of the idea to give him more time for his hobbies after work. By changing the clock by two hours, he hoped that he would be able to spend more time outside in the evening.

In 1915, a British man named William Willett (who happens to be the great-great-grandfather of Coldplay singer Chris Martin) suggested the idea to make the most of the natural light. He wanted more time to enjoy it outside in the evenings and told the British government that people were wasting much of the Summer light asleep but the British government didn't listen and rejected his idea.

While the UK still didn’t like the idea, the Germans decided to try it out in 1916 to allow for more light while they worked. The idea quickly spread to other European countries, as well as Russia and the United States.

However, after the war, many counties abandoned the idea, but the tradition continued in Ireland, parts of Europe, Canada, and the US.

Do the clocks still change in other countries?

There are many countries that change their clocks. For example in the EU the clocks go back an hour on the last Sunday in October and go forward on the last Sunday of March.

In Canada, clock change starts at 2am on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

In Australia, the clocks go forward on the first Sunday in April and go back on the first Sunday in October.

Countries like China, Japan, and India, do not change their clocks.

The last change should have taken place in 2021 but because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it never took place. Although people are discussing to end the time changes, nothing has been decided yet.

What do you think about the time change? Should it be stopped or continued?
