Getting Back to the Office After the Omicron Wave

Recently, the government has eased the restriction rules for Covid-19, and we are all very excited about it. However, as we know from the 24th of January onwards, we will be allowed to return back to offices. Although some employees are ready to return, many of them are not.

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, a lot has changed. The pandemic has not just changed our daily routine but also has altered the way we work, learn, and communicate with one another by adjusting to the social distancing guidelines and restrictions. This change led to a more virtual experience and existence, both personally and professionally.

Of course, there are so many positive aspects of the restrictions easing such as, being able to spend more valuable time with family and friends, not having to be limited to a curfew and so on.  However, there are a couple of negative aspects too. During the lockdown we had the opportunity to learn more about ourselves, from who we are and what we want, to adapting to a whole new lifestyle, and getting used to the comfort of working remotely. After adapting to some of these changes, being expected to jump back into the old routine can sound very overwhelming to many as expectations have changed.

What can employers do to make return to the offices more desirable and safer?

As more and more businesses bring their employees back to the office, employers need to ensure that they understand and accept that with these new changes applied into our lives, their employees may have changed.

Employees may feel nervous and anxious about returning back to the office so providing a welcome back email with as much information regarding any policy changes, safety integrations, first day or week plan could be a way to ease some stress. In addition, making it clear for employees to not be afraid to ask any questions at any time could also help reduce negative responses.

Both employers and employees still may not feel as comfortable with mixing with others, shaking hands or even taking off their masks, so it is important to communicate boundaries with co-workers and respect one another. It is also crucial for the employers to provide essential equipment such as hand sanitisers and masks, as well as ensuring offices are cleaned regularly to prevent any further spread of the virus.

After a couple years of working remotely, getting back to the office will most likely be a difficult adjustment for many. Employees will expect compassion during this challenging time. If their return back to the office seems too harsh it will spark dissatisfaction and issues. Therefore, giving employees access to some flexibility would make it easier for them to adjust to these changes while keeping everyone satisfied.

Overall, respecting each other and making everyone feel comfortable returning back to the office will definitely make a positive impact towards employers and employees. Moreover, it can provide support to ease any anxiety.

A little tip to consider, conducting random acts of kindness such as offering a complimentary box of biscuits or chocolates with tea, coffee or any other drinks can make staff feel very appreciated and welcomed back!
