Pay Equality

Hello everyone, The UN General Assembly proclaimed September 18th as International Equal Pay Day. Unfortunately this day is still needed and the goal of it is to acknowledge and promote action towards ensuring men and women are paid the same for performing work of equal value.

Why fight for equal pay ?

The Gender Pay Gap is a Global issue which also includes the Ireland region.

It’s unacceptable that men and women are paid differently for the same work.

All workers have the right to receive equal remuneration for work of equal value.

Also equal pay is beneficial for women, the economy and society as a whole.

For instance by reducing the gender pay gap, couples are given the opportunity to share out work and housework more evenly without any financial loss.

What’s Ireland's condition about the Gender Pay Gap ?

Based on the data published by the OECD-Eurostat in 2017 the gender pay gap in Ireland was about 14.4% that is below the EU average of 14.9%.

But there are many reasons why these calculations could not reflect the reality of the Gender Pay Gap such as education levels, the number of hours worked and the kind of work involved.

On July 12th 2021 the Irish Government introduced Gender Pay Gap reporting as a legal requirement in Ireland.

The reason behind this decision is to make Pay Gaps more transparent and highlight actions needed.

In this reporting Employers are obliged to publish information relating to the remuneration of their employees by reference to the gender of such employees.

For Irish employers this reporting will be a challenge, particularly in the first years of implementation.

However changes relating to Gender Pay Gap should have priority and should start from the Education System and then from Businesses.

Finding effective and appropriate strategies can make an important economic and social impact.
